There’s a small town people always refer to, which I thought was in Iowa. Surprisingly, after contacting a Chamber of Commerce, AAA and Convention & Visitors Bureau, no one there wrote back. Then, a friend told me the town was in Idaho. I wrote the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce to investigate further…
Dear Director of Directions:
I’ve heard about a town in Idaho called Bumfuck, but can’t seem to locate it on any maps. I’ve checked other spellings such as Bumphuck, Bumfuk and Bumphuk (wouldn’t that be an awful name for a law firm?) and had no luck at all.
I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s not easy planning a trip when you can’t figure out where the heck you’re going. Is this city anywhere near Boise? Can you please point me in the right direction?
Lost before I even arrive,
“Me”
The Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce responded by sending:
The IDAHO Official State Travel Guide, 2009 Directory of Guided Outdoor Adventures from the Idaho Outfitters & Guides Association (IOGA), RV Idaho – 2009 Edition, Lewis & Clark And The Native Peoples Idaho, Official Highway Map — IDAHO Adventures in Living, and Idaho Rivers | A Guide — Adventure in its NATURAL, liquid state.
Final Thoughts: The Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce never sent a letter. Each of the brochures arrived one at a time on different days. It sure would have been a lot easier if they just told me where Bumfuck is, rather than making me hunt for it on my own. I hope they’ll be sending more brochures because I’ve been through them all and still haven’t found Bumfuck.
Even if you have no desire to visit Bumfuck, Idaho still looks like a beautiful state. Learn more about it at VisitIdaho.org. Tourism is big business. So remember, whatever — or wherever — you spend your money, one way to make sure no one ever gives you the runaround is to Write The Company.
