In Germany, it’s KNISPER! KNASPER! KNUSPER! In Sweden, PIFF! PAFF! PUFF! In America, SNAP! CRACKLE! POP! Yet in any language, Rice Krispies can really liven up breakfast with its constant chatter. I contacted Kellogg’s to find out how they got the Krispies to communicate…
Dear Rice Krispies Linguists:
How do you make Rice Krispies talk? What makes Snap, Crackle and Pop such blabbermouths? I’ve listened to other cereals and never hear a peep. My ears have practically been in bowls of Frosted Flakes, Special K and Raisin Bran … and things are quieter in there than a recording of Marcel Marceau’s Greatest Hits.
What’s the secret? What’s mixed in there with the alpha tocopherol acetate and thiamin hydrochloride to set off that harmonious Snap, Crackle and Pop symphony? Have you ever done any testing to determine whether there are more Snaps, Crackles or Pops per bowl?
Are there plans for other talking cereals? How about Rice Sharkies to “Da-dum, Da-dum?” Or, Rice Barkies — I’ll bet dog lovers would love to sink their teeth into a cereal that growls and snarls. What about Noah’s Arkies with double sounds of multiple animals?
When Krispies talk, I listen! But what makes them talk?
Kellogg ‘s Consumer Affairs responded with:
Thank you for contacting us to ask how KELLOGG’S® RICE KRISPIES® cereal makes its famous SNAP! CRACKLE! and POP! sound.
Each toasted puff of rice is filled with tiny air bubbles. When cold milk is added to the cereal, it is unevenly absorbed. This causes an irregular swelling of the starch structure in the puff of rice. This swelling places a strain on the remaining crisp portion, breaking down some of the starch structure and producing the famous SNAP! CRACKLE! and POP! that consumers have enjoyed since the cereal was introduced in 1928.
We appreciate your interest in our company and products.
Final Thoughts: Always listen to what you eat before you eat it. You may be surprised by what it’s trying to say. For you history buffs, here’s more about Snap! Crackle! and Pop! Hopefully, this information will make your next bowl of Rice Krispies even more enjoyable. Finally, whenever you have a product that makes funny noises, be sure to find out why and Write The Company.
