What comes to mind when you hear “Shih Tzu”? The correct answer is not “Gesundheit!” What comes to my mind is how so many people have dogged saying it right for so long. That’s why I turned to the American Shih Tzu Club…
Dear Those Who Master The Shih Tzu:
Once and for all, can you solve the debate about how to pronounce the breed Shih Tzu? Is it: Sheet su, Sheet zu, Shit su, Shit zu, She tsu, She tzu, Shitzy, Shitsy, Shit sui, She zoo, She soo or shihthumthinelse?
I’m sure I’ve been saying Shih Tzu wrong my entire life. Thanks for helping verify it.
Very Shih Tzuly Yours,
“Me”
The Corresponding Secretary of the American Shih Tzu Club responded with:
The correct pronunciation of the word Shih Tzu is: “Sheed-zoo.”
In addition, the word Shih Tzu is used for both singular and plural (i.e. not Shih Tzus).
I hope that helps and thank you for your interest.
Final Thoughts: Thanks to the American Shih Tzu Club for straightening that out. Did you know the Shih Tzu was cherished by Chinese dynasties, emperors and royal families … and were considered holy? Can you imagine Chinese royals running around saying, “Holy Shih Tzu”? In any case, if you ever need to find out the answer to a pet peeve, just Write The Company.
