Automobile safety testing with crash test dummies intrigues me. I contacted Chevrolet, a division of General Motors Corporation, to learn more about it…
Dear Chevrolet Crash Testers:
My second car ever was a 1980 brown Chevy Camaro. I loved it dearly right up until the day I totaled it. But that’s another story.
I think the crash test dummies that automobile companies use in simulated accidents are fascinating. Out of curiosity, how many crash test dummies does Chevy send into harm’s way each year? How much does each one cost? Do you give them names? Is there one dummy at Chevy that holds the record for most crashes before forced retirement?
Any chance you could send me a spare crash test dummy head? Even one that’s been in an accident and is beyond repair would be fine. I’d love to display it in my garage as a reminder to drive safely.
I’ve been in a few stupid accidents, so I know what it feels like to be a dummy. And I wasn’t even in a car.
A Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center Representative responded with…
Thank you for contacting Chevrolet. We appreciate you taking the time to write us about our crash testing and to request a crash test dummy head.
Unfortunately, the details of our crash test procedures are not available to the public. Crash test dummies are disposed of completely for security reasons and cannot be released to the public. We have no information regarding how many crash test dummies are used.
Rest assured that GM follows standard procedures for vehicle crash testing. If you need more information, log on to gmability.com/safety to read about our crash testing procedures.
Thank you for your understanding and if you need further assistance regarding this, we invite you to call us (contact information followed).
Final Thoughts: I’m disappointed that I can’t have a dummy’s head from Chevy. However, the link they provided about GM safety procedures offers interesting information from smart people who are also using their heads. After reading that, steer yourself here and check out the latest Chevrolet vehicles.
Especially with cars, not taking safety seriously can really wreck your day. But no matter what the product, a terrific way to uncover answers that can help protect you is to Write The Company.
