What is the Chain of Custody? That’s what I wanted to know when I read about it with relation to Post-it Notes. Rather than call a divorce attorney, I asked 3M…
Dear Post-it Notaries:
I use Post-it Notes when I’m asleep. There are all sorts of reminders waiting for me in the morning. I call these thoughts Post-it hypnotic suggestions. But that’s not why I’m writing. I just thought you might find it fascinating since most people probably use them while they’re awake.
I’m writing because I read that Post-it Notes are Chain of Custody Certified. Why would you do that? This concerns me because my ex-wife and I agreed to joint custody. By law, does this mean I have to give her 50% of all Post-it Notes I purchase? Is Chain of Custody Certified something one of your happily married lawyers cooked up? It’s really unfair because I’ve always sent my ex enough money to go out and buy her own.
When I can’t remember it, I Post-it! I’ve got 23 Post-it Notes around my office at this very moment. How many would you estimate are stuck around your office right now?
A Consumer Relations Representative from 3M Office Supplies Division responded with:
Thank you for contacting 3M regarding our product. We appreciate hearing from you.
Feedback from our customers is an integral part of our business and we do encourage it. We value your comments and opinions, which are being documented for the marketing and manufacturing groups.
The Chain of Custody (CoC) is the process by which certified forest products are verified to come from properly managed, sustainable sources. All organizations wishing to become CoC certified must meet the minimum requirements in product traceability, product storage and handling, invoicing, and record keeping, and have an on-site audit by an accredited third-party verifier.
3M is a company committed to sustainability. This isn’t a new initiative or a recently introduced strategy. For more than 30 years, it’s the way we’ve done business.
If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us directly at (phone number followed).
Again, thank you for taking the time to write us.
Final Thoughts: Thanks to 3M for resolving this custody issue. In case you’re curious, the response was typed on 8 ½” x 11″ letterhead, not handwritten on a bunch of Post-it Notes. There was no mention of how many Post-it Notes are scattered around the 3M office. I’m up to 37 in mine though.
Luckily, Chain of Custody refers to forest products and a commitment to sustainability. So thankfully, when it comes to retaining full custody of Post-it Notes after a marriage ends, you’re out of the woods because the relationship wasn’t sustainable. Here’s where you can learn more About Post-it Sustainability, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and what it means to be SFI Chain of Custody Certified.
Since 3M is so committed to sustainability, it’s a shame that with a divorce rate hovering at around 50 percent they don’t also provide marriage counseling. In any case, if you’ve got something you don’t want to forget, jot it down on a Post-It. However, if you need counseling regarding a product, you can always Write The Company.

I’ve opted out of Post-It-Notes because I can never keep track of them, or I can’t remember which one I’m supposed to do first. I now use the little sticky application for my computer. Just click the sticky icon and voila! No cost. No mess.

Post-it Notes can pile up, but I’m sticking with them for one reason: Try sticking a computer sticky someplace other than behind your computer screen.

SFI is very proud of its Chain of Custody certification standard. The standard was developed by professional foresters, conservationists, and scientists, and informed by a wide range of public and stakeholder views. The SFI label can be found on many products, and it is backed by strict requirements that give consumers confidence that their purchased goods come from well-managed forests.
SFI is the largest forest certification standard in the world and is committed to promoting responsible forest management in North America. Please visit SFI’s website at sfiprogram.org for more information.

Thank you for the additional information about Chain of Custody. I’ve already told my ex-wife about it, so we’re good there. I hope my readers, especially those who aren’t familiar with SFI and CoC, will visit your website to learn more.
